Many readers have commented upon the
machinery written into my narratives, especially as it relates to
transportation and energy use. Very little "magic" exists in
the story, and most of what I describe as "magical" is
attributed to God's power. The technology outlined in
the narrative is derived from actual equipment designed and
used on earth, but perhaps not in a widespread manner. Much of
this technology remains relatively simple and could
be manufactured using methods and materials available to the
people in the Deveran milieu. One reason for including these
alternative technologies relates to the fact that there are no fossil
coal, oil or gas deposits on Devera. Energy use, by necessity,
becomes far more efficient when it is not abundant enough to
